Jim Winkler - North Shore Urgent Care

James Winkler, PA-C

Jim Winkler has practiced medicine in Hawaii for 26 years. He serves as President and CEO of Kauai Community Health Alliance while also caring for patients as a medical provider at Hale Lea Medicine & Urgent Care. Winkler graduated class president from the USC School of Medicine Primary Care PA Program in 1984 and has advanced training in functional & integrative medicine. Teaching appointments include Pacific College, and the Fort Collins Family Medicine Residency Program. Professional memberships include the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Greater Los Angeles Nutrition Council. Winkler has been a published medical newspaper columnist for many years. He is also the founding director of a non-profit humanitarian organization, the Amicus Foundation, which sponsors projects in medicine, education, women’s needs and cultural preservation. Also a professional musician Winkler has performed with Charles Mingus, Gabor Zabo, Benny Powell, Johnny Guitar Watson, Alex Acuna (Weather Report), Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), Donald Fagen (Steely Dan), Todd Rundgren, Makana and others, and has worked as a feature film composer. He presently resides in Hawaii with his wife, a children’s writer/illustrator, Dorianne.

Arthur Brownstein, MD

Dr. Arthur Brownstein, MD is a public health & general preventive medicine specialistat working at Hale Lea Medicine & Urgent Care. He has been practicing medicine for 35 years. He graduated from Jefferson Med College at Thomas Jefferson University in 1980, specializing in public health & general preventive medicine as well as primary and urgent care. He is the author of two books: Healing Back Pain Naturally, and Extraordinary Healing. He has been a clinical instructor of medicine at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, and has worked for many years with the celebrated physician and researcher Dean Ornish, MD. His service to the North Shore community of Kauai for the last 3 decades has been extraordinary.

Kambria Beck Holder, MD — Medical Director/ CMO

Originally from Santa Barbara, California, Dr. Beck Holder studied botany and ecology in the Southwestern US then received her medical degree from the University of Arizona School of Medicine. She returned to California to complete her family medicine training at the UCSF affiliated Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program. In addition to family medicine, Dr. Beck Holder is board certified in Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine. She is also passionate about Women’s and Children’s health, acupuncture, osteopathic manipulation, ecological health, food as medicine and trauma informed care. She currently lives on Kauai with her husband and two daughters. She enjoys cooking, practicing yoga, hiking and playing in the ocean with her family.

Katherine Filbeck, APRN-Rx, NP-C

Katherine Filbeck is a graduate of Hawaii Pacific University School of Nursing and is a Family Nurse Practitioner. She has over two decades of experience in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Women’s Healthcare and Aesthetic Medicine—providing primary and emergency medical care services as well as aesthetic & anti-aging procedures. Katherine is also passionate about delivering healthcare to underserved communities in Thailand & South America.

Jon Allen, PA

Jon Allen graduated from Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program in 2013. He has worked in Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Family Medicine. Most recently, he worked at a community hospital near Seattle, WA. In addition to the care of surgical patients, Jon has also dedicated himself to caring for the underserved communities throughout the United States. He has served in several leadership roles, boards and committees. Faculty appointments include the University of Washington and Seattle University. Mr. Allen has a particular interest in preventive and curative medicine. His care has always been guided by the principle of Cura Personalis – care of the whole person (physical, emotional, and spiritual). His approach to medicine is treating every patient with respect and compassion. In his spare time he enjoys climbing mountains, running through forests, hiking along beautiful paths, traveling to distant countries, and cooking for family and friends. He and his beautiful wife, Jaclyn, reside in Kapaa with their 5 pets.

Crystal Okamoto, DPT

Crystal received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2007 from Pacific University in Oregon. She then returned home to Hawaii, where she worked for 5 years specializing in outpatient orthopedics, sports medicine and post-op rehabilitation. In pursuit of advanced training and to offer the highest level of care, she traveled to the US mainland to be certified in dry needling, ergonomics, other forms of manual therapy and functional rehabilitation. Areas of interest include preventive medicine, functional movement screens, and improving the quality of life for elders. After working around Washington D.C., the Midwest and the Virgin Islands, she has returned home to Hawai’i joining the North Shore Wellness Center ohana in Kilauea. She has a background in wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and is an assistant freediving instructor.

Noah Brantley, DPT

Lover of the outdoors, Noah Brantley grew up in rural North Carolina where he played varsity soccer, basketball, and developed a healthy addiction to surfing. After receiving a degree in applied mathematics he needed to choose a path forward. In his words “I knew I wanted to help people and be a positive contributor to society while leaving minimal impact on the environment.” Graduating from PT school in 2013 at the top of his class and class president, and receiving a doctorate of PT, Dr Brantley enjoys working with all of Kauai’s populations—from our Kapuna to our keiki, pro athletes to everyday working folks. To know Noah is to love him.

John Winnes, LCSW

John Winnes received his MSW in clinical social work from the University of Hawaii and has 40 years experience in public mental health settings and private practice. He specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy for individuals, couples and families, addressing a broad spectrum of behavioral health issues. John has been a loving supportive presence to our Kauai communities, counseling patients from Lihue, Kapaa, Anahola, Kilauea, Princeville, Hanalei and Haena for many decades. He has been an important part of our medical clinic and its vision on the north shore of Kauai.

Steven Dick, MS

Utilizing a client centered psychodynamic approach, Steven has been practicing counseling in the community mental health sector for over 20 years. His professional focus is primarily on Human Development, Human Sexuality, Gerontology, Family Systems and directly serving those in our community affected by domestic violence and sexual assault. Steven currently serves as Vice President on the Hawaii State Coalition Against Domestic Violence Board of Directors and believes in building a stronger Kaua’i community through social justice activism and the strengthening of interpersonal relationships. In his free time Steven enjoys staying physically active and spending quality time with his family, friends and canine pack.We are grateful for his caring service to our Kapaa, Anahola, Kilauea, Princeville, Hanalei and Haena communities by being part of the North Shore Wellness Center at Hale Lea Medicine.

Carolyn Williams-Orlando PhD

Carolyn Williams-Orlando received her Ph.D. in humanistic and transpersonal psychology from Saybrook University and has 18 years mental health counseling experience with children, teens, adults, veterans and elders. She specializes in mind-body therapies and client-centered approaches which target attentional and behavioral concerns, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, spiritual emergency and distress. She is sincerely grateful and honored to serve North Shore Wellness Center in Kilauea and Hawaii Center for Children and Families in Waimea. Dr. Willow also has a masters degree in virology from Harvard Medical School.

Kauai Community Health Alliance (KCHA) has put together an Advisory Council and Board that includes prominent citizens in the community and experts in the areas of medicine, nutrition, law, special needs of teenagers, the elderly and other groups, substance abuse and addiction, mental health services and sustainable community building.
